Ocean Education
Message in a Bottle
Message in a Bottle is an interactive learning initiative that brings the ocean into the classroom. As part of the One Ocean Expedition 2025-2026, the project invites students to explore key ocean-related topics - including marine science, climate change, and sustainability - while engaging in creative storytelling and collaboration with peers worldwide.
Developed by Drew School in San Fransisco, these learning materials are designed for middle and high school students and can be easily adapted to different educational systems.
The downloadable resources include lesson plans, interactive activities, and guidance for writing messages. All student contributions will be showcased on this website. In selected ports, some schools will also have the opportunity to present their work on board Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
By participating in Message in a Bottle, students add their voices to a global conversation about the future of our ocean. Their messages - whether scientific reflections, creative expressions, or personal commitments - will travel with the expedition, connecting young minds from different countries in a unique, real-world exchange of knowledge and ideas.

Sail training and ocean research
The iconic Norwegian tall ship, Statsraad Lehmkuhl, is equipped with modern scientific instruments and serves as both a sail training vessel and a research platform during the twelve-month One Ocean Expedition (April 2025 - April 2026).
A part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science
The One Ocean Expedition is an official ambassador for the UN Decade of Ocean Science, working to inspire action and connect people through knowledge about the ocean. By bringing science to life, the expedition fosters a deeper understanding of the marine environment and our shared responsibility to protect it.
Bringing research to the classroom
On board, researchers, students, content creators, and crew members will share their discoveries and daily experiences. Their insights will be made accessible to students, allowing them to follow the journey, explore new findings, and gain a deeper understanding of the ocean’s vital role in our planet’s health.
